For a casual Telegram account, a free browser number is usually enough, and Telegram is fairly forgiving about them. The one rule is to pick a fresh one.

The quick tell for a bad free number is a stale inbox. If the most recent message on it is old, the number is likely busy or worn out, and Telegram will treat it as suspicious. Pick one with recent activity and you save yourself a round of retries.

This is the fix worth knowing before you need it. When the verification text does not show, do not keep waiting on it. Let Telegram's countdown run out and the Call me option appears. Telegram then places an automated call and reads the code aloud, and a call frequently gets through when the SMS is held up.
